hello ati ki o kaabo! Welcome to the Nigerian chapter of Education4Earth. We’re located in Lagos, and we focus on bringing environmental education to our community.
Our education program here reflects a gap in understanding of environmental challenges and their origins. We learned about this through our experiences with college classmates, local highschoolers, community members, and meetings with other chapter leaders. So, we focused on history and science. Namely, through a mixture of those two, where we talk about notable contributions to climate science and the scientific basis of them. We discuss how these findings fueled activists and influenced politicians, and created a whole new section of the press called the climate media. We currently have 5 members and 19 students.
Our education program extends to our long-term projects, where we run social media campaigns to inform people about local environmental challenges, such as water sanitation issues, congestion, and urbanization. We hope to be a source of learning of these issues and of Nigeria’s climate action plan for different demographics; so, like the Uzbekistan chapter, we’ve run our campaign in different ways-- through making posters, through informational seminars online and in-person, and infographics on various social media platforms. We are also currently planning a project like the “ReMade” vlog project to foster individual action and initiative to address this gap in environmental education. Going forward, we plan to collaborate with local youth groups, like the NigerianYouth Climate Coalition (NYCC), to help bring policy change.
